In 2016 the government reformed the governance of the Italian port network: the prime objective, to improve efficiency and to boost the capacity to generate employment and economic growth across the merger of neighbouring ports and by prioritising administrative simplification. The governance of the Italian ports was assigned to sixteen Port Authorities, individually spearheaded by a public-appointed President and a streamlined Management Board.
The governance of the Ports of Genoa, Savona and Vado Ligure was assigned to the Western Ligurian Sea Port Authority, which ranks as Italy's pre-eminent port range, as the Rhine-Alpine Corridor's southern Mediterranean port of call and as the southern maritime gateway port to Europe.
