Relations with EU Institutions

The Western Ligurian Sea Port Authority is firmly committed to fostering relations with the European Union institutions, in close collaboration with the Liguria Region, the Italian Northwestern political authorities and central government, and takes active part in industry associations and working groups focusing on key port and transport policy issues.

The Ports of Genoa are the Mediterranean southern port of call of the Rhine-Alpine Corridor, an increasingly strategic axis of the central European transport network. It is consequently important to highlight the Port Authority’s participation in the Forum of the Rhine-Alpine Corridor, in the European Economic Interest Grouping “Rail Freight Corridor Rhine-Alpine”and its membership of the European Grouping of Territorial Cooperation “Interregional Alliance for the Rhine-Alpine Corridor”.

The Port Authority pledges its full support to ESPO (European Sea Ports Organisation), which represents and promotes the common interests of the EU member-state seaports across the European institutions and policy makers.

Membership of these organisms provides the Port Authority with the opportunity to monitor closely the EU port and transport policies as they take shape and, consequently, to take actively part in the decision-making process. Top priorities for the Ports of Genoa and the European port industry in general currently include the environmental sustainable development of the port industry, the strategic role of the ports across the supply chain and the trans-European transport network, port governance and concessions, and infrastructure funding, with the Western Ligurian Sea Port Authority assuming its rightful role as a leading partner of the EU institutions.
