April registered record box volumes, with a 29.1% increase on the previous year and an 8.8% advance on 2019, for a total of 248,226 TEUs handled by the Western Ligurian Sea Ports.
Specifically, full container handling throughput, both in import (+37.6% vs. 2020) and export (+22.4% vs. 2020) rose sharply, reaching 164,081 TEUs, a record performance on the part of the Western Ligurian Sea Port Authority in terms of full-container gateway traffic, breaching the volumes handled in February 2020, in pre-pandemic era.
Overall, total cargo throughput registered a total of 5,426,800 tons, a +37% growth rate compared to the corresponding period of last year (during the first phase of the pandemic) and a 1.4% rise year-on-year. Conventional traffic increased a sharp +82.5% to 1,200,754 tons. Mineral oils performed strongly, a 46.2% advance on April 2020, whilst vegetable oils and wine picked up by +6.4% and chemical products dipped by 15.2%.
The Cruise and Ferry Ports of Genoa and Savona reported 34,736 passengers, a staggering +565.6% increase month-on-month, but well below the pre-Covid-19 volumes of traffic.
