The Ports of Genoa and Savona-Vado Ligure reported a sharp increase in cargo throughput of 41.2%, compared to May of the previous year, 5,643,117 tons, whilst total tonnage reached 5,899,955. In addition, the Port Authority sets a new monthly record in box traffic, registering a total of 260,323 teus, and displayed fast growth in both import and export container handling numbers, posting a +9.2% rise on 2019 of the pre-pandemic era
The strong performance of the Ports of Genoa not only points to the recovery of all the major terminal facilities, but also reflects a healthy local economy and Italian manufacturing sector. In fact, the driving force behind the surge in volumes is the growth in full-container gateway traffic.
The upward trend in the ro-ro and specialised commodity segment registered towards the end of April has been reconfirmed, with an increase of +21%, rising to a total of 5.9 million tons handled in the first five months of 2021.
The solid bulk sector performed strongly, with a 21.9% advance on the corresponding period of 2020; whilst the liquid bulk trade, following an initial negative start to the year, posted a +57.9% rise in mineral oils and a +74.4% surge in chemical products. Steel coils handling activities also grew by +70.5% on May 2020.
It is important to note that the cruise industry is showing signs of recovery, with Costa Cruises and MSC Cruises reporting a total of 28,678 passengers in the Homeports of Savona and Genoa, whilst ferry traffic rose by +93,5% compared to April 2021.
