Second Quarter 2023 Port Volumes

The second quarter (April – June) 2023 statistics released by the Port Authority reflect the ongoing overall slowdown in international trade registered globally. Total throughput dropped by -6.7% compared to the corresponding period in 2022, whilst container traffic fell by -1.8%. In the first six months of the year the Ports of Genoa and Savona-Vado Ligure reported total tonnage of 32,443,265 (-5.2% vs. 2022) and total box traffic of 1,400,009 TEUs (-1.7% vs. 2022).

All commodity sectors, at varying degrees, recorded a contraction in trade in the second quarter of 2023. Conventional general cargo dipped by -1.6% (+0.2% vs. 1st six mths 2022), whilst solid bulk fell by -35.8% (-18.2% vs. 1st six mths 2022) and total liquid bulk by -9.8% (-5.4% vs. 1st six mths 2022). 

The Genoa and Savona passenger terminals all performed strongly and reported an overall increase of +54.1% compared to the second quarter of 2022 and +15% on the corresponding period in pre-covid 2019. A total of 1,746,443 passengers were registered in the first six months of 2023 (+65.8% on the previous year) which, to date, breaks down into a total of 987,379 cruise and 759,064 ferry passengers.
