The opening ceremony was presided over by the Italian Vice Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Edoardo Rixi, the President of the Liguria Region Marco Bucci, the acting Mayor of Genoa Pietro Piciocchi, the President of ENAC Pierluigi Di Palma, the Western Ligurian Sea Port Authority Government Commissioner Admiral Massimo Seno and the Adjunct Government Commissioner Alberto Maria Benedetti, the President of the Genoa Chamber of Commerce Luigi Attanasio and the President of the Airport of Genoa Enrico Musso.
The construction of the Terminal East wing, completed in 18 months with an investment of 15 million euros, including 11.5 million euros allocated by the Port Authority, major shareholder of the Airport of Genoa, covers 5,500 sqm and is set to boost overall annual passenger throughput capacity to 3 million. The new bright glass panelled building, overlooking the sea, features an ample departure lounge with food court and retail outlets, 4 state-of-the-art security checkpoints, 250 seats (a third equipped with power outlets), 3 new boarding gates and a passenger boarding bridge docked at the gates with air-conditioning and lift to allow easy access to and from the aircraft to the apron.
The new Genova City Airport expansion also foresees the forthcoming refurbishment of the existing dedicated passenger area to improve passenger flow management and services. In addition, a sizable investment programme has kicked off to build the new railway station alongside the airport with an on-terminal moving walkway which in 6 minutes will connect passengers to the national and international rail network, with the provision of regular direct rail services to/from the cruise and ferry terminals of Genoa and Savona. All the projects underway, scheduled for completion by 2026, are set to boost the global appeal of the Ligurian capital’s airport, both with airlines and passengers alike.
