Savona hosted the christening ceremony and maiden call of Eco Savona, the fourth unit of the Grimaldi Green 5th Generation (GG5G) hybrid ro-ro ship fleet, equipped with the technology to cut emissions in port to zero by using the electricity stored in mega lithium-ion batteries during navigation.
21 April 2021 - The Eco Savona ranks worldwide as one of the largest and most advanced ro-ro ships in terms of eco-sustainability, 238 metres in length and 34 metres wide, with a capacity of up to over 500 trailers and 180 cars, and yet designed to halve CO2 emissions compared to the previous generation of ro-ro vessels and to reduce them to zero at berth. The Eco Savona, like her three sister ships, is scheduled to offer regular ro-ro services between Italy and Spain.
The ceremony was attended by the President of the Western Ligurian Sea Port Authority, representatives of the regional authorities and local shipping community, and top management of Grimaldi Group, alongside a selection of the Naples-based company's major clients.
"Environmental sustainability is at the core of Italy's Recovery and Resilience Plan, and henceforth is no longer simply an ambitious target, but has now emerged forcefully as a concrete objective, and Grimaldi Group has most certainly proved its firm commitment to investing in all the sustainable development goals requested", declared President Paolo Emilio Signorini during the event, " We believe that today, more than ever, sustainable change and innovation are crucial to achieving economic growth which is compatible with the creation of a positive environment as well as social impact," he concluded.
