The 2018 edition of the Italian Cruise Day has just closed in Trieste. Italy ranks as Europe’s leading cruise destination and the travel and tourism industry-company, Risposte Turismo, has forecast further increases in passenger traffic across the Italian cruise port sector. In 2018 the Port Authority of the Western Ligurian Sea is poised to consolidate its second-place ranking in Italy, with 1,919,000 passengers (1,022,000 in Genoa and 897,000 in Savona).
In addition, the report contains a preview for 2019 which is set to be a record year for the Ports of Genoa-Savona as they are expected to breach the two-million threshold, with 2,300,000 passengers. Stazioni Marittime Genova has announced 1,350,000 cruise passengers for the forthcoming year, whilst Palacrociere Savona follows with 885,000 passengers. Plans are afoot to refurbish the Palacrociere terminal to cater for the requirements of the new Costa Crociere flagship Costa Smeralda, currently under construction, scheduled to be christened in Savona in November 2019. Whilst the new flagship MSC Seaview homeports in Genoa, offering weekly departures alongside MSC Meraviglia.
Disney Cruise Line has already reconfirmed 3 calls at the Port of Genoa for the following summer. Genoa also featured twice amongst the winners of the CLIA Italy Award Ceremony, hosted by the Cruise Lines International Association Europe alongside the events of the Italian Cruise Forum. Stazioni Marittime Genova was nominated Best Italian Port Service Provider, and the prize was received by the CEO Edoardo Monzani; whilst the Vice Mayor of Genoa, Stefano Balleari, received the coveted Best Italian Cruise Destination award for the second consecutive year.
