The growth in full containers (+ 24.6% imports) bound for the Northern Italian catchment area through Genoa and Savona-Vado is a tangible sign of the economic recovery underway and the major role played by the Ports of Genoa.
The upward trend in total tonnage registered by the Western Ligurian Sea Port Authority and the strong performance of other strategic sectors, namely, passenger and full container gateway traffic, are cited as grounds for continued optimism. Cargo throughput rose to 40,003,838 tons, a return to pre-pandemic levels and a +7.8% increase on the first seven months of 2021.
In July 2022 containerised cargo edged up by +8.3% and conventional cargo by +2.1%, the economic drivers behind the growth month/on month in total freight volume. It is important to note that inbound full container gateway traffic surged by +27% compared to July 2021, and by +24.6% from January-July 2022 compared to the corresponding period of the previous year.
The liquid food bulk and chemical product commodity industry also performed strongly, reporting a +35.4% increase on July 2021.
The Ports of Genoa and Savona-Vado posted positive throughput for passengers in both segments of the business: a total of almost 786,000 passengers, up +60.5% on July of the previous year and +13% on 2019, which breaks down into just under 591,000 ferry and 195,000 cruise passengers.
