Emergency measures a priority.

The President of the Western Ligurian Sea Port Authority, Paolo Emilio Signorini, accompanied the Governor of the Liguria Region, Giovanni Toti, on a site inspection of the facilities of the Port of Savona damaged by the fire which broke out following the violent sea storm which swept across the northwestern Italian coast on 29 October. Together they met with the Mayor of Savona, Ilaria Caprioglio, and the stakeholders of the Ports of Savona and Vado Ligure to discuss the measures of the emergency response plan.

Governor Toti assured the shipping community the full support of the Regional Local Authority in conveying to Central Government the immediate requirements of the terminal operating companies hit by Monday night’s extreme weather conditions. The key objective of the Port Authority and Region is to resume in full port operations as rapidly as possible, with the option to adopt emergency procedures already in use in Genoa’s port in response to the disruptions caused by the tragic collapse of the Morandi Bridge. The Port Authority and terminal operators will join forces to make an immediate assessment of the damage sustained and implement an emergency response plan. President Paolo Signorini has confirmed the firm commitment of the Port Authority to release emergency funds for immediate repair efforts.

A major fire broke out at the Savona Auto Terminal (Grimaldi Group) after sea waters rose and flooded the port of Savona during a violent sea storm. Initial reports point to a short circuit in the vehicle storage warehouse which caused the cars to explode and catch fire rapidly, damaging over 1000 vehicles. Several hundred vehicles destroyed in the blaze were brand new Maserati stored at the terminal ready for export to the Middle East. No one was reported injured in the blaze.
