Tanzania Ports Authority management inspects the major on-site infrastructure works in progress across the Ports of Genoa and Savona-Vado.
The delegation from Dar es Salaam, accompanied by a team of RINA engineers, were in Italy on a training course to acquire specialised expertise from the Tyrrhenian and Adriatic ports. During the guided boat tour of Genoa, the group focused specifically upon the project of the new breakwater in the Sampierdarena basin, a sophisticated feat of engineering, and the construction works underway in Sestri Ponente for the expansion of the shipyards and the installation of a new 440-metre mega-dry dock to cater for the construction of ultra-large vessels. The visit to the Ligurian capital concluded with an inspection of the PSA Pra' box facilities, in conjunction with the arrival of a new generation container ship over 360 metres in length.
In Vado Ligure the delegation viewed the construction works in progress for the extension of the breakwater by an additional 450 metres, at 35/49 metres below sea level, with the expansion of the turning basin by approximately 150 m to ensure that the next generation container vessels can manoeuvre in full safety towards the terminal facilities. The project foresees the relocation further at sea of the existing 13 caissons and the installation of an additional 4 new mega cellular components currently under construction.
