The MSC Rosaria container vessel undergoes mooring tests prior to official inauguration of the terminal

MSC RosariaGenoa, 22 July 2019 -This morning another MSC vessel called at the new Calata Bettolo Terminal. This is the second trial to have been conducted since the end of May. The MSC Rosaria - 280 m long, 32 m wide with a 9.8 m draft and a capacity of 5,000 teus – completed the tests successfully in terms of both the navigation channel and berthing manoeuvres.

May 30th 2019, fourteen years after the official presentation of the Calata Bettolo container terminal project, and following the concession contract awarded last year by the Western Ligurian Sea Port Authority to Consorzio Bettolo, controlled by Gian Luigi Aponte’s shipping group, marked the arrival of the first MSC ship at the new 750 m linear quay, 180,000 sqm terminal with an annual throughput capacity of 550,000 teus, subsequent to the completion of computer shipping simulations.

Plans are afoot to install six quayside cranes, for a total investment of 50 million euros, in addition to Automated Stacking Cranes and straddle cranes for a further 49 million euros. Consorzio Bettolo plans to provide a full range of handling equipment for the stacking area, the on-site rail facility and the customs inspection area for a total of 136 million euros, whilst the construction of the terminal was funded by the Port Authority for a total of 230 million euros.
