"The Ports of Genoa on track to capitalise upon the fast growth in demand for maritime transport and to boost on-site strategic complementary port infrastructure to serve the vibrant ship repair and refit yards."
President Paolo Emilio Signorini was invited as keynote speaker at the seminar "Growth in the ship repair industry: investments for the future of Genoa", organised in cooperation with the IL Secolo XIX media group, in the historic Port Authority headquarters of Palazzo San Giorgio, to discuss recent trends in the blue economy, the status of the new breakwater project and updates on the Port Masterplan.
"The upward trend in Genoa's ship repair and maintenance service industry continues with a surge in orders. Within this framework, our duty is to maintain, redevelop and boost on-site assets to cater for the requirements of our operators, for example, as in Sestri Ponente, with the construction of Italy's future largest shipbuilding facility or in the ship repairs area with a range of redevelopment projects and the release of extra land," declared President Signorini, commenting upon the strategic role played by the ship repair service industry in the maritime sector and on the dedicated investments underway in Genoa.
"The Port of Genoa's 1.3-billion euro New Breakwater is the flagship project of the National Recovery and Resilience Plan and the contract for the construction of the new facility is set to be awarded by 12 October," continued the Port President. "The project is not simply the relocation of a breakwater further at sea, but it is an example of a highly sophisticated feat of engineering and is central to improving maritime accessibility, thereby firmly establishing Genoa amongst Europe's leading ports."
With reference to the Masterplan, President Signorini stated that, "The New Port Masterplan will be completed by the end of 2023, but the broad guidelines and strategies to be implemented over the next twenty/thirty years will be published by the first half of the forthcoming year. A focus will be dedicated to boosting industrial development in the port, including the ship repair and newbuild sector, and high added value services, namely, logistics and redevelopment of port-city areas to increase tourism and trade. An example? The Levante Waterfront, the Hennebique former grain silos and the new Dune Urban Park in Pra'."
