The new breakwater takes shape: seven consortia have submitted offers in response to the tender

The deadline for submissions for participation in the tender for the implementation of the feasibility study for the new breakwater of the Port of Genoa expired on 15 January 2019. Seven offers were received by Invitalia, the central purchasing agency commissioned by the Western Ligurian Sea Port Authority on the basis of an agreement signed in April 2018. The seven consortia feature both Italian and European consulting and engineering firms, confirming the major interest prompted by the plan to build Italy’s greatest port infrastructure project in recent years.

The eligibility check of the offers has now commenced and is due to be completed within 30 days. A commission will be appointed for the evaluation of the technical proposals delivered by the candidates admitted to the second phase.

In brief, the objective of the tender is the development of the technical and financial feasibility project of the new breakwater in the Sampierdarena basin of the Port of Genoa, which will cater for the future requirements of the ultra large container ships, in compliance with the strictest safety and security regulations, at an estimated cost of approximately 800 million euros. The new project foresees the construction of a 5-km breakwater, 500 metres from the coastline, with depth up to 40 metres. The project feasibility study is the first step in a 15-year timeframe which will be divided into three distinct phases.
