Within this framework, the Propeller Club- Port of Basel invited the Western Ligurian Sea Port Authority to meet with the key decision-makers of the German-speaking Swiss logistics industry, interested in learning more about shipping hubs in the Mediterranean and the Southern option as an alternative to the Northern range maritime trade route.
The Ports of Genoa delegation, led by the Government Commissioner Admiral Massimo Seno, and flanked by the port authority management from the Marketing team, Alberto Pozzobon and Leonardo Picozzi, and Port Development, Alberto Pera, illustrated the recent evolutions and shifting patterns in maritime transport following restrictions to transits across the Suez Canal. The Port Commissioner highlighted the capability of Genoa and Savona-Vado to adapt to the volatile situations underway, whilst continuing to maintain a high level of service quality in catering to the requirements of the ultra-large container vessels, over 20,000 TEUs, which regularly call at the terminals in Pra’ and Vado Ligure.
The keynote speech delivered by Admiral Seno highlighted the pivotal role of rail transport in serving the Swiss market: since 2018 three round-trip regular services, operated by PSA, successfully connect the Ports of Genoa directly with Basel every week. Whilst the forthcoming completion of the new hi-speed/hi-capacity Terzo Valico railway line, and last-mile rail infrastructure works at the Ports of Genoa and Savona-Vado, will cater for the 750-metre trains, thereby boosting further the competitive edge of the Ligurian ports.
In addition, with a view to strengthening the partnership between Switzerland and Italy, Admiral Massimo Seno invited the President of the Propeller Club, Christian Doepgen, to visit with members the Ports of Genoa and Savona-Vado next autumn, to meet with the vibrant port cluster and discuss together the specific needs and demands of the Swiss industrial-economic cluster in the deployment of the Southern European maritime gateway ports.
