Access procedures reviewed for incoming trucks across San Benigno and Etiopia cargo gates.

After a detailed review of current port gate operations, conducted by the Port Authority of the Western Ligurian Sea and the Genoa Harbour Master in conjunction with delegates from the Ship Agents, Freightforwarders, Terminal Operators and Road Haulage Associations, the new Order on cargo gate procedures in San Benigno and Etiopia has been published.

The new regulations have been issued in response both to the disruption caused by the collapse of the Morandi Bridge, and to the demands of the road haulage companies for a more efficient port gate system in Genoa, to ease the congestion which has been building up due to the surge in container traffic experienced by the port in recent years.

As of 1st November 2018 (to date the new provisions are still being tested), it will become mandatory for all heavy goods vehicles - excluding transportation of project/oversize cargo - to use the San Benigno Gate as their entrance and exit points. It will henceforth be forbidden, with the sole exclusion of vehicles transporting project/oversize cargo, to use the Etiopia gate, which opens directly onto Lungomare Canepa.

It is important to note that the closure of the Etiopia Gate will naturally come into force following the completion of the installation of the new Ponente Gate, thereby continuing to guarantee direct connections with the terminals and cargo facilities, specifically those located outside of or on the edge of the port perimeter (Messina, Erzelli 2, Derrick), and with the Genova-Aeroporto motorway exit for westbound traffic.

The new port gate operating system is based upon a more intensive use and expansion of Genoa’s E-port system, aimed at cutting road hauliers’ waiting times and transit times substantially in/out of the Genoa-Sampierdarena port basin.

Once completed, the same IT- system will also be applied at the new Ponente Gate to provide maximum assistance to truckers who opt to use the Ilva Road which will shortly open to heavy goods vehicles accessing the Port.
