Ports of Genoa multi-business strategy impresses the Swiss, Lugano’s LAC Conference Centre hosts the 7th edition of the “Un Mare di Svizzera Forum”, highlighting the Ports of Genoa and Savona Vado’s strategic role as major logistics platform serving landlocked Switzerland and Southern Europe overall, and primed to respond with resilience to the challenges faced by the global supply chain in today’s volatile geopolitical scenario. 11 October 2024 – This year’s leading industry event focused upon the impact of current issues, namely, international conflicts, cyber-security and environmental sustainability, upon maritime lanes across the Mediterranean and subsequent repercussions upon the carriers and the ports. The 7th edition of the forum grouped together the public institutions, shippers and supply chain service providers of the Canton Ticino with the stakeholders of the Ports of Genoa, heralded as Switzerland’s southern maritime gateway in the Mediterranean. In his welcoming address, the Government Commissioner of the Western Ligurian Sea Port Authority, Admiral Massimo Seno, highlighted safe navigation and port security as guiding principles behind infrastructure and socio-economic development across the Ports of Genoa, Pra’, Savona and Vado Ligure, and underlined that relations between the Ports of Genoa’s vibrant shipping community and the top Swiss public and private decision-makers continue to be strong as Switzerland establishes its position as leading manufacturing and consumer area in Central-Southern Europe. Within this framework, the Port Authority is firmly committed to accelerating the implementation of its major infrastructure investment programme, such as the New Open-Sea Breakwater of Genoa and new direct on-terminal rail and road inks to improve safe and sustainable maritime and overland accessibility alike. “The completion of the range of tangible and intangible infrastructure works underway across the ports is a key driver in boosting the performance and competitive edge of Genoa and Savona-Vado, to consolidate existing and new trade links in the current complicated global geopolitical situation and to offer alternative supply chain strategies. This is my commitment in my capacity as Government Commissioner and it is the firm commitment of the Port Authority overall,” stated Admiral Seno in his closing remarks. The panel discussion entitled “Mediterranean Europe: logistics during wartime” , provided the Port Planning and Development Director of the Western Ligurian Sea Port Authority, Marco Sanguineri, with the opportunity to highlight the strategic importance in the ongoing period of uncertainty and unrest of the multi-business vocation of the Ports of Genoa and Savona-Vado, which are not only equipped to maintain the direct scheduled liner services with over 400 ports worldwide – as corroborated by the latest port statistics report which points to stable, and in some commodity sectors, a slight growth in volumes - , but can also cater for new cargo and passenger throughput demands. He further underlined that the specific characteristics of the cluster of ports of the Western Ligurian Sea will be further enhanced by the mid-and long-term strategic development plans: a response to the need to reconcile an increase in volumes generated by the new infrastructure investments underway with the requirements of local urban sustainable redevelopment and the protection of the environment, is a key priority of the Port Authority, as is the completion of the digitalisation processes underway to improve and accelerate port terminal access by road and by rail.
