Founded in 1992 and part of the MSC Group, GNV is one of the world's leading shipping companies in the coastal navigation and passenger transport sectors: with a fleet of 25 vessels, the company operates 31 routes in 7 countries to and from Sardinia, Sicily, Spain, France, Albania, Tunisia, Morocco and Malta.

In addition to dedicated passenger services, GNV is committed to the development of new intermodal maritime logistics chains in Europe. In 1998, the company inaugurated the Genoa-Barcelona connection with Spain, which was included as a good example of Motorways of the Sea in the White Paper on Transport adopted by the European Commission on 12 September 2001.

GNV is the world leader in terms of available bed capacity (almost 30,000) and the second largest ferry operator in the Mediterranean, both in terms of tonnage and linear metres transported. In the last 5 years, GNV has added 13 units to its fleet, increasing its capacity by approximately 60%. Last year, GNV handled 7.4 billion euros worth of goods in Italian ports alone, representing 0.35% of the country's GDP, and contributed over 800 million euros in added value to the tourism industry.

The Port of Genoa is a strategic hub for the company. In 2023, GNV made over 1,000 calls at the Port of Genoa, underlining the company's status as the leading operator of the Genoese port.
