Water Quality Control

In compliance with Italian and EU legislation, the Western Ligurian Sea Port Authority regularly monitors the potential negative impact generated by port operations and, specifically, liquid effluents, both natural and synthetic, on the marine environment, with the aim of addressing potential risks promptly.

The Water Management Plan is the planning tool introduced by the EU Directive 2000/60/CE (Italian Law Decree n.152/2006) to outline provisions for the improvement of the aquatic environment and for the protection of inland surface waters, transitional waters, coastal waters and groundwater.

With specific reference to the Port Basins of Genoa, Multedo, Voltri and Pra’, Water Monitoring Services are conducted on a quarterly basis and are handled by the wide-ranging “Cleaning, Removal of Pollutants and Monitoring of Coastal Waters in the Port of Genoa” service operator. An “Idronaut” multi-parameter probe is used to identify the principal physico-chemical parameters of the sub-surface water, including temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen, pH, Red-Ox, in approximately 110 designated sites in the port. In addition, samples of sub-surface water are taken in 20 sites to test for ammonia nitrogen, fecal coliforms and chlorophyll, in compliance with UNICHIM standards. In selected sites (eg. estuaries, future maritime infrastructure building sites), samples are also obtained of the marine sediment.
