Energy Transition
Onshore Power Supply

The provision of shoreside electricity is a key driver in reducing the environmental impact of port operations on the surrounding urban fabric. With the introduction of shore power facilities, ships calling at the port can switch off the generators and plug into a shoreside electrical power grid, with a subsequent sharp reduction both in carbon emissions and unwanted noise produced by the combustion engines vibrations, across the adjacent port and urban areas.

The Western Ligurian Sea Port Authority has already embarked on its course towards quay electrification and port decarbonisation. Onshore power supply is readily available in Genoa's Ship Repair area and at the Port of Pra', and facilities are now under construction at the cruise and ferry terminals in both Genoa and Savona. The Port Authority pledges to invest in and accelerate the full transition of the Ports of Genoa and Savona-Vado Ligure towards the deployment of cleaner energy.

OPS at the Port of Pra’

The installation of shoreside electrical power facilities at the Port of Pra’ has been funded in part by the EU INES (Implementing New Environmental Solutions) project, with the completion of quay electrification at two berths at the PSA Genova-Pra’-operated terminal. The recent ultra-large container ships are powered by onboard high voltage systems of 6.6 kV 60 Hz and draw up to 5 MW (7,5 MVA), and the terminal at Pra’ can now offer OPS technology to cater for two ULCVs simultaneously.

Quay electrification leads to a drastic cut in direct carbon emissions and to a further 63% reduction in indirect emissions linked to electrical energy consumption, whilst simultaneously minimising also noise pollution.

OPS at the Cruise and Ferry Terminals

Works are underway to install shore power infrastructure at the passenger terminals in Genoa and at the cruise terminal in Savona.

In Genoa quay electrification will proceed in two distinct stages: first phase, two berths at the cruise terminal and an add-on second phase, four berths at the ferry terminal.
In Savona the project calls for the electrification of two berths at the cruise terminal.
