During his first official visit to Genoa, the U.S. Consul General in Milan, Robert Needham, together with the Consul for Political and Economic Affairs, Holly Holzer, had the opportunity to inspect Genoa’s port facilities. Accompanied by the President of the Port Authority, Paolo Emilio Signorini, the US delegation visited the passenger port and the container and multi-purpose terminals of the Sampierdarena and Prà basins, onboard the Genoa Mooring Services vessel.
Genoa, 19 May 2020 - In the course of the meeting in the historic Port Authority headquarters of Palazzo San Giorgio, Paolo Signorini illustrated the sizable 2.6 billion euro investment programme underway to upgrade facilities to accommodate the latest generation of ultra-large container and cruise ships, and thereby consolidate the strategic role of the Ports of Genoa at the heart of the Mediterranean, a commanding position from which to serve the transatlantic and Far East trades. Specific focus was dedicated to the project for the construction of the new breakwater, designed to guarantee direct access and a wide turning basin for the future vessels to manoeuvre in full safety.
Consul Needham was impressed by the range of major infrastructure projects underway in Genoa’s maritime hub, acknowledging the leading role played by the port at the service of the local and Italian economy overall and pledged to foster the institutional relations between the U.S. Consulate General and the Port Authority.
