The concession for the operation of rail freight transport in the Port of Savona was awarded in 2015 to the Temporary Association of Companies composed of Serfer Servizi Ferroviari S.r.l. and Trenitalia S.p.A. (today MERCITALIA Shunting & Terminal and MERCITALIA RAIL, both part of the state-owned Italian Railway Group). The group has exclusive rights over the supply of shunting services, whilst the provision of rail transport services along the strategic railway lines to/from the Port of Savona-Vado Ligure has been opened up to competition. MERCITALIA also manages the port rail infrastructure and the operation of a fleet of shunting and railway traction equipment owned by the Port Authority.
In 2021 the concession holder handled almost 22,000 rail cars for a total of 1,300 trains.
The term of the concession contract is for 10 years until 28 February 2026.
