The most striking feature of Genoa’s Cristoforo Colombo Airport is the short distance to the city centre and to the port, just 6 km away.
Genova City Airport can accommodate the most advanced aircraft on its 3,065-metre runway. It offers direct flights to major European destinations which, with the cruise terminal a mere 6 km away, is an important consideration for cruise operators. Alongside the inauguration of a new Non-Schengen boarding area in 2022, baggage control and handling systems have been upgraded to speed up operations and facilitate passengers’ movement between the airport and passenger port.
An extensive refurbishment of the three-storey 14,000-sqm passenger terminal building is underway and foresees an expansion by a further 5,000 sqm, including the installation of three new boarding gates. The renovation works, for a total of 20 million Euros, are scheduled to be completed by the end of 2024.
Coach parking and taxi ranks are located next to the airport, whilst a 900-vehicle car park sits in front of the passenger terminal. In addition, the airport offers terminal shuttle bus services to Brignole and Piazza Principe mainline railway stations in the city centre and to Sestri-Airport station.
The synergy between the Airport and the Cruise Port will be further strengthened as measures are put into place to develop the airport’s intermodal potential. The airport offers direct access to the motorway, whilst a freeway connects the airport to the city centre and the port in just under 15 minutes.
By 2025, Genova City Airport will be connected by a moving walkway to a new dedicated mainline railway station, Sestri(/Erzelli, offering incoming passengers the opportunity to reach the city centre and cruise terminal in 12 minutes via a regular shuttle train service.
The airport’s cargo terminal comprises a 2,200-sqm warehouse, including offices, a 3,000-sqm yard and a 900-metre quay. The terminal offers flights to a selection of domestic and international destinations, and is equipped to accommodate special cargo airlifters, such as the Antonov 124, one of the world’s largest and heaviest aircraft. Growth in volumes in Genoa is expected across the increasing demands of the shipconstruction and heavy machinery manufacturing industries.
