The term port security is composed of two elements which are complementary: safety, that is, a commitment to ensuring that the port and its environs are safe for all those who work or have access to the port area, and security, that is, the introduction of strict security standards as a safeguard against potential criminal acts. The key point of contact in this process is “prevention”: this phase is carried out daily across physical, procedural and technical controls which are implemented on the basis of specific planning processes deriving from a risk evaluation and assessment.
