Objective: minimise environmental impact in the Ports of Genoa and Savona. The cruise liners have undersigned a protocol agreement with the Genoa Harbour Master designed to reduce the environmental impact of passenger ships in the Ports of Genoa.
With the introduction of the “Genoa Blue Agreement”, a group of passenger shipping lines - Costa Cruises, MSC Crociere, Royal Caribbean International, Disney Cruise Line, Majestic Cruises, Fred Olsen and Algérie Ferries (ENTMV), together with the tug boat operators, Rimorchiatori Riuniti Porto di Genova - are committed to shifting to the use of marine gasoil with a sulphur content not exceeding 0.10% by mass, in a radius up to 3 miles from the port.
This represents an important voluntary step in the path towards environmental sustainability in the Ligurian ports, pre-empting future regulations. The agreement, valid until the end of 2020, also calls for the monitoring of carbon dioxide emissions on a monthly basis.
In addition to compliance with the protocol guidelines, Rimorchiatori Riuniti Porto di Genova already connects its vessels shoreside to electrical power whilst at berth in the Port of Genoa and Prà, thereby reducing further diesel engine emissions in the port basins.
