The Italian Prime Minister Conte attends the ceremony at the construction site
Genoa, 1 October 2019 - The sirens marked the hoisting operations for the first of the nineteen steel and concrete spans to be installed onto the new bridge, following the tragic collapse of the Morandi viaduct on 14 August 2018.
The 50-metre long span, weighing up to 500 tonnes, was hoisted at a height of almost 50 metres, and positioned between Piers 5 and 6 of the new viaduct over the Polcevera River. The Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte and the Minister for Infrastructure Paola de Micheli, attended the ceremony alongside, the Mayor of Genoa and Reconstruction Commissioner Marco Bucci, the Governor of the Liguria Region, Giovanni Toti, and the architect Renzo Piano, who donated the project for the new Bridge for Genoa.
The Prime Minister Conte launched the hoisting operations at the press of a button on the stage installed for the occasion.
