Savona: Roadmap towards a new maritime rail station

The Palacrociere Cruise Terminal provided the backdrop to the Signing Ceremony of the MoU for the construction of a maritime railway station and the upgrading of the rail link between Savona Parco Doria Station and the new facility.

7 October 2024 – The Memorandum of Understanding was signed by the Government Commissioner of the Western Ligurian Sea Port Authority Rear-Admiral Massimo Seno, the Mayor of Savona Marco Russo, the Director of RFI Italian Rail Network Fabio De Barbieri and the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport, under the auspices of the Vice Minister Edoardo Rixi, and with the full support of the local authorities, industry associations and trade unions. The agreement for the development of an integrated mobility system to serve Savona’s cruise passengers provides a plan of action for the implementation of the planning phase, approvals process, tendering procedure and construction works guidelines. The project to be phased in foresees the upgrade of the 2.5 km-railway line between Savona’s Parco Doria Railway Station and the Maritime Station, and the installation of new rail digital systems. The future station, to be built alongside the Savona Maritime rail junction, will be equipped with a platform structured to accommodate 550-metre long freight trains, and a 160-metre passenger platform located just 300 metres from the Cruise Terminal connected by a skywalk. The 55-million euro project commences with the presentation of the Feasibility Study of Alternative Projects on the part of RFI by the end of 2024. The immediate subsequent phases foresee, upon approval of the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport and the Port Authority, the preparation of the Technical-Financial Feasibility Study by RFI, coordinated in conjunction with the projects underway commissioned by the City Council of Savona.

Last December, the Western Ligurian Sea Port Authority, together with the local administrations, Ministry of Transport and RFI, launched an integrated passenger mobility plan to fast-track connections between Genova City Airport, the railway network and Genoa’s Stazioni Marittime Cruise Terminals. The scheme foresees three distinct phases: the construction of a 650-metre moving walkway between the airport terminal building and the new Erzelli-Airport rail station; a direct passenger link between Genoa’s Piazza Principe’s underground rail station and the cruise terminals; and the installation of a direct rail link between the Savona Parco Doria station and the Port of Savona. In January a Steering Committee was nominated, grouping together the Ministry, RFI, Port Authority, Liguria Region, City of Genoa, City of Savona, Trenitalia S.p.A., Stazioni Marittime S.p.A., Costa Crociere S.p.A., the Airport of Genova and ENAC, coordinated by the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport, to accelerate the smooth transition of the millions of passengers who travel every year by land, by sea and by air to reach the ports and the cities of Genoa and Savona.
