13 September 2018 - The removal of the final obstacle to the installation of the new roadway in the port basin of Sampierdarena is underway: the “Customs” gate, separating the domestic from the international trade area, has been demolished in response to the disruption caused by the collapse of the Morandi Bridge.
The President of the Port Authority of the Western Ligurian Sea, Paolo Signorini, and the Admiral of the Port of Genoa, Nicola Carlone, were on site as the workers tore down the wall running along the road which will shortly be deployed to connect the eastern basin of the port with the western basin , thereby easing the congestion which has been building up in certain parts of the city in the aftermath of the tragic incident. The new roadway, Strada del Papa, will be used exclusively by heavy goods vehicles in/out of the port, and is scheduled to open on 19 September.
Works are currently underway to complete the paving of the road and to install new roadsigns and guardrails, in addition to the new Port Ponente Gate which will be used as entrance and exit point to the new roadway.
