Investment Programme

The wide-ranging large-scale infrastructure plan is in place at Genoa and Savona's passenger ports and begins to take shape across the cruise terminals. With over 40 million euros already invested to address the major challenges posed globally by the industry, the Western Ligurian Sea Port Authority is now ready to cater for the advent of the ultra-large cruise vessels and to ensure easy, safe, integrated and sustainable accessibility for the ships and the over 5 million passengers which call annually at the Ports of Genoa.

Genoa, 4 March 2024 – Construction has officially started this morning in Genoa on Italy’s first undersea road tunnel, set to become Europe’s largest immersed tunnel. A sophisticated feat of Italian engineering which embraces a novel approach to large-scale infrastructure projects, planned with a major focus towards the future, in compliance with strict sustainable environmental, economic and social requirements. The new tunnel will play a key role in upgrading road access to Genoa, both in terms of urban and port traffic, Italy’s premier cargo and passenger port and leading Mediterranean global maritime gateway to the major European manufacturing and consumer centres.

New urban road infrastructure at the Port of Vado Ligure opens on schedule. The road link has been designed to ease traffic across Vado, whilst optimising port gate management of heavy vehicles in/out of Vado Gateway container terminal.

Construction works at the Port of Vado Ligure Rail Terminal, for the expansion of the yard and the optimisation of rail freight movements, proceed on schedule, as per project timeline.

Genoa's New Breakwater begins to take shape in the open-sea, with 1 million tons of gravel deposited on the seabed. Construction works proceed on schedule.

Genoa's port gate security facility upgrade is near completion. A range of tangible and intangible infrastructure - including new port fences, automatic number-plate and container recognition, automated port gates - is currently being installed across all main 14 port access points to the Port of Genoa, in compliance with international guidelines.

Container yard expansion works,  in progress since April of last year at the Bettolo Genoa Mediterranean Gateway Terminal in the Sampierdarena Basin, move rapidly ahead.

Work continues offshore on the New Genoa Breakwater, with the second block of columns under construction and 600,000 tons of gravel already deposited on the seabed.
