Elizabeth Lee Martinez, the Consul General of the United States in Milan, returns to Genoa in the aftermath of the Morandi Bridge collapse.
Following her first official visit to the Ligurian capital last March, Consul General Lee Martinez returned to Genoa to inspect by boat the facilities of Italy's premier port, including the passenger port and the cargo terminals of the basins of Sampierdarena and Prà, with specific focus dedicated to Genoa's flagship container terminal, VTE. The US delegation was keen to receive an update on the sizeable investment programmes underway to upgrade port facilities to accommodate the latest generation of ultra-large container vessels: namely, Calata Bettolo container terminal, the new breakwater in the Sampierdarena basin and Vado Ligure container terminal.
Accompanied by the Port Authority Secretary General, Marco Sanguinieri, the strategic role of Genoa in the Mediterranean as both a major multi-service and container gateway port was highlighted. In fact, the Ports of Genoa also rank as the leading maritime hub in Italy for trade with the United States: in 2017 total imports/exports between Genoa and the US amounted to 2.8 million tonnes, whilst container traffic rose to 230,000 teu, which accounts for approximately 40% of total containerized trade between Italy and the USA. With a wide selection of regular liner services to the US-East Coast, Genoa's main partner-ports are New York-New Jersey, Norfolk, Savannah, Houston and Miami.
