Port Days 2024: Children explore the Ports of Genoa

The 2024 edition of the Italian Port Days in Genoa and Savona-Vado, coordinated by the Western Ligurian Sea Port Authority, provided organised groups of children with the opportunity to explore a myriad of port activities across a wide selection of hands-on learning experiences.

30/31 October 2024 – In Savona, 156 primary school kids had fun at the interactive workshops held at the Palacrociere Cruise Terminal, organised in collaboration with the Porto dei Piccoli Onlus Association. Alongside these activities, the pupils were also given the opportunity to tour by boat the port cargo facilities, on board the distinctive marine pilots and ship mooring service vessels, and to see in action the powerful tug-boats which ensure safe navigation on the part of the ultra-large ships sailing in/out of the port basin. The children also visited the photographic exhibition on display at the dockers headquarters of the Compagnia Portuale Pippo Rebagliati, illustrating the evolution of port labour over the past century.

At the Port of Genoa, 225 primary and secondary students enjoyed a selection of workshops organised at the Port Authority headquarters of Palazzo San Giorgio by Porto dei Piccoli, followed by a boat tour of the wide range of passenger and freight terminals catering for ultra-large cruise and container ships. Pupils also welcomed the opportunity to view and take part in hands-on learning activities on board the prestigious Coastguard patrol boats berthed at the port.

These initiatives form part of the Ports of Genoa strategy to foster educational programmes and raise awareness amongst the younger generation across the vibrant Ligurian blue economy, in compliance with the objectives of Italian Port Days 2024, promoted by the Association of Italian Ports – Assoporti, and dedicated this year to disability inclusion.
