Energy Transition
Renewable Energy and E-Mobility

The focus of the Port Authority’s clean energy transition programme at the Ports of Genoa and Savona-Vado points towards the installation of solar plants and the construction of smart grids for the production and distribution of renewable energy for common user services, - namely, lighting towers, public road lighting system, buildings -, and for the new in-house electric vehicle fleet.
The overall objective of the Western Ligurian Sea Port Authority’s green port infrastructure projects underway is to maximise the use of renewable energy to cater for the requirements of the highly energy-intensive activities of port operations, and to pave the way towards the establishment of Italy’s first port sustainable energy hub.

The production of electricity from a photovoltaic power system to fuel e-mobility across the Ports of Genoa and Savona-Vado is a key factor in the fulfilment of the following recommendations:

  • A sharp reduction in carbon emissions, as the new e-vehicles are phased in, in replacement of the petrol and diesel vehicles;
  • An overall decrease in fossil fuel consumption;
  • Cost savings generated by new energy efficiency provisions.

Specific projects outlined in the Port Authority’s Energy Plan form part of a range of “Green Ports PNRR”, (Italian Recovery and Resilience Plan) funded by the Ministry of Ecological Transition in 2022 for a total of 35 million euros.

Impianti fotovoltaici
Port of Genoa

Plans are afoot to install solar panels on a range of buildings sited in the shipyard and freight terminal area in the eastern part of the port.

The energy generated will be used to power common user services such as public road lighting systems, port gates and recharging stations for e-vehicles.

The new photovoltaic plant is to be connected to a smart grid, funded across the ministerial Green Ports programme.

Fotovoltaico
Port of Savona

The port grid and energy storage programme foresees the introduction of an advanced energy management system in the Port of Savona, operated across the deployment of a smart grid.

The project is scheduled to phase in the upgrade of the current electrical plants, develop an energy storage hub supplying electricity produced by a photovoltaic power system and install recharging stations for e-vehicles.

This new technology is set to revolutionise the Port of Savona’s energy infrastructure and pave the way towards the establishment of Italy’s first port sustainable energy hub.
