The Ports of Genoa feature 35 major terminal operators with concessions pursuant to Art. 18 of Italian Law 84/94, 21 companies authorised to carry out port operations pursuant to Art. 16 of Italian Law 84/94, 274 companies authorised pursuant to Art. 68 of the Italian Navigation Code and 70 companies authorised to carry out shipbuilding and refitting activities in the Port of Genoa. The contribution to employment at the ports is not only limited to the companies operating within the state-owned boundaries, but the Ports of Genoa and Savona-Vado also generate employment across the surrounding area, with a large number of jobs linked to the logistics and maritime industry.

Port Authority

The Port Authority is a non-economic public body with functions of governance, planning, coordination, promotion and control of port cargo and passenger handling operations and other cargo and shipbuilding/refitting activities carried out in ports. It is also responsible for the standard and extraordinary upgrade and maintenance of common user infrastructure in the port, the assignment and control of activities aimed at the provision of common user services, the coordination of administrative activities carried out by public bodies and organisations in ports and in the maritime state-owned areas included in the territorial district, the exclusive administration of areas and assets in the maritime state property, and the upgrade and development of road and rail links with inland logistic hubs.

Art.16 of Italian Law 84/94 Port Operations and Services

Port operations are the loading, unloading, transhipment, warehousing, and overall handling of cargo carried out within the port area. Port services are those referring to specialised services, complementary and ancillary to the cycle of port operations.

Article 16 of Italian Law 84/94 stipulates that port operations and services must be carried out by authorised companies. These companies play a key role in ensuring the maximum efficiency of port operations.

The technical-nautical services of pilotage, towage, mooring and buoyage are services of common user general interest.

The shipyard area is the most labour-intensive sector of the port and groups together a diverse range of companies in terms of size and target markets.

The ports of call in the System, where several marinas are located, are home to companies involved in all phases of the ship life cycle: design, construction, maintenance, repair and scrapping.

The transport and logistics chain consists of a multiplicity of industrial and service activities dedicated to goods and passengers.
